Karadayan Nonbu

Tomorrow is Karadayan nonbu. This nonbu (vrat) is observed for the long life of the husbands, hence the main ritual for this nonbu is tying of the nonbu charadu (yellow thread, similar to the one the bridegroom ties around the neck of the bride) at the time of the Meena Shankranti. This year the time given for this ritual is between 8.15 and 9.00pm IST.
Many readers have been asking me for the Nonbu adai recipe. I have already given the recipe for sweet as well as savoury adais.
I wish every one a happy nonbu.  Offer Nonbu adais as neivedyam for  Parvathi Devi Sametha Uma Maheshwara and pray for a long and happy married life with good health and cheer.

    Being an Ammupatti you should not mislead other's on such auspicious rituals. First of all Karadai Nombu is performed on the exact transition time between Masi and Panguni masa. So its actually between 3 am to 3:45 am (IST) on 15th March early morning. As you said its not on 14th March as it will be only Masi during that time.

    PS: For convenience of this generation, many priests are suggesting to have nombu on 14th between 8 to 9 pm...But is ritually incorrect...

    It was not my idea to mislead people. As I had already mentioned earlier(http://bhagavathy.blogspot.com/2007/03/karadayan-nonbu.html)the time of nonbu changes every year and when we were young we used to celebrate the nonbu at the exact time of Sankraman at 12.30 am and 2 am, etc. These days, however, people are not able to do the pooja at these times and hence according the priests' it is being conducted at a convenient time.

    Thanks for the beautiful write up. I made the adais as you said with the store bought rice flour in the Indian store here and they came out beautifully. Prayed to God for a long lasting and happy married life and for the wellness for the husband. Hope He spreads peace and happiness.

    HA HA HA. I am surprised that being a brahmin you do not know that, auspicious rituals are never performed in the middle of the night. So what the priests are saying is not for our 'convenience'. It's just a sensible way to do it.
